Being involves relationships with others and the environments we are part of. In these lectures, Bourdieu sets out to define and defend sociology as an intellectual discipline, and in doing so he introduces and clarifies all the key concepts which have come to define his distinctive intellectual approach. In this volume, Bourdieu focuses on two of his most important and influential concepts: habitus and field. During 18 his career, Bourdieu wrote prolifically on a remarkably wide range of issues in 19 society. As examining all of his work in one chapter is not possible, we will focus 20 on three of Bourdieu’s concepts that will enable us to see the social world through 21 his eyes: habitus, field and capital. The issues of disembodiment and disembeddedness are explored through a study of the work of Pierre Bourdieu on `habitus' and the `field'. The idea of habitus yields a more dynamic theory of embodiment central to a feminist understanding of gender identity as a durable but not immutable norm.
